The Amber Chand Collection helped to raise funds for the Save Darfur Coalition through sales of The Darfur Basket of Strength at this special benefit event held at Symphony Space in New York city on September 16th.
Everyday 2.5 million people in Darfur face the threat to starvation, disease, and rape. The Save Darfur Coalition is an alliance of over 170 faith-based, advocacy and humanitarian organizations . Its mission is to raise awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to "mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of 2 million people in the Darfur region of Sudan".
The Save Darfur Benefit was the inspiration of Lisa Dozier, a producer at Symphony Space in New York City who created an inspirational evening with speeches by David Rubenstein, Founder of the Save Darfur Coaltion and David Pressman, a civil rights lawyer and activist who accompanied George Clooney and his father to Darfur recently. Also shown was the movie God Sleeps in Rwanda by Kimberlee Acquaro and the play, Waking Kya, written by Siobhan Fitzpatrick based on real issues that exist in refugee camps. Musical performances were offered by Karmen Michael and Ben Tyree and IC Express.
The Darfur Basket of Strength was highlighted at this event as a special symbol of pride for the Sudanese women who are currently part of a Womens Center in the Kalma Refugee Camp in Darfur.
