I remember the day I got a phone call from Kim Sparling in Kansas City. She was excited to share with me the story of how she discovered the Amber Chand Collection after searching online. She felt inspired by the mission of our company and by its vision to support courageous women in regions of conflict. Having just read "Three Cups of Tea," the autobiographical book by Greg Mortenson on his experience in Afghanistan, Kim was particularly pleased to see that we were working in Afghanistan on the Kabul bracelet and necklace project in collaboration with Women for Women International. I was struck by Kim's enthusiasm and I invited her to become our first Ambassador of Peace Consultant, bringing the collection to women Kansas. She loved the idea and without hesitation said "Yes!" Here is her story in her own words.
"Something happened to me after I read "Three Cups of Tea" last fall. I realized that one person can make a huge difference in the lives of others, both economically and spiritually. I finally understood what it is like for persons on the other side of wars, and how similar those people are to me and my family.
"So I started noticing opportunities to get involved, first locally, then internationally. First I attended a peace rally sponsored by American Friends Service Committee here in. Then I got involved in a national presidential campaign for an anti-war candidate. Then through AFSC I learned of an Iraqi family being relocated here who needed some pantry supplies, and our family of 6 went shopping for them at the local Middle Eastern grocery.
"During this time I had signed up for an online social networking site called Work-It Mom for work at home moms. Someone invited me to sign up for a newsletter from Women's Edge Coalition, which has since changed its name to Women Thrive Worldwide. On their first newsletter was an ad for Amber Chand Collection, featuring the Kabul bracelet made of beautiful blue fluorite. I immediately clicked on the link, as it was about a month before Christmas and my husband welcomed any ideas about gifts. After looking over the site for a few minutes, I instinctively emailed Amber and asked if she had ever considered doing home parties to sell her items. She contacted me, and now three months later we are preparing to launch sales here in Kansas City. I will have a booth at the AFSC Peace Festival to be held on Saturday, March 15th on the campus of UMKC (University of MO at Kansas City) to introduce the products and answer questions."
